Sustainability Summit: Lagos Takes the Lead in Building a Resilient City

In a bid to drive its vision for a sustainable future, the Lagos State Government has announced the launch of the Lagos Sustainability Summit, a yearly forum aimed at advancing strategies for a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous city.

Shaping the Future of Our State

Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals, emphasized the significance of the summit, stating, “This effort will shape the future of our state… We’re not just talking, we’re taking decisive actions.”

A Call to Action

The summit, scheduled for September at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, will bring together stakeholders from governmental bodies, private sector leaders, civil society organizations, and international partners to share ideas and collaborate on innovative solutions to address critical sustainability challenges.

Building a Resilient Lagos

The event, themed “Building a Resilient and Sustainable Lagos,” aims to chart a course for Lagos to emerge as a model for sustainable urban development, anchored on social equity, economic prosperity, and environmental stewardship.

Key Focus Areas

The summit will focus on key areas, including:

– Ethical business practices with positive social impact
– Sustainable finance and investments supporting SDGs
– Responsible waste management and local sourcing
– Ethical labor practices

A Collective Resolve

Finnih stressed the importance of collective action, saying, “We’re standing at the forefront of a transformative journey… This summit is a testament to our collective resolve.”

Partnership and Collaboration

The summit is being organized in collaboration with the Lagos State Safety Commission (LSSC) and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), with the goal of fostering social cohesion, promoting ethical business practices, and enhancing sustainable finance.

A Lasting Legacy

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, LASEPA General Manager, noted that the initiative would not only enhance sustainable business practices but also champion environmental protection for future generations. Mr. Lanre Mojola, LSSC Director General, emphasized the importance of building a city with robust occupational safety and health standards.
