…Calls for Investment in Public Water Supply
A cholera outbreak has spread across 25 states in Nigeria, including Lagos, with 1,141 suspected cases and 30 deaths reported so far this year. The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) warns that the crisis will continue to ravage due to the government’s failure to invest in safe public water supply.
CAPPA notes that despite efforts to sensitize citizens, the outbreak persists due to underlying issues like inadequate sanitary facilities and lack of access to potable water. The organization criticizes the privatisation of public water supply, prioritising profit over people’s needs.
“Cholera is preventable, but it thrives in areas with insufficient sanitary facilities and inadequate safe water supply,” said Akinbode Oluwafemi, CAPPA’s Executive Director. “The government must invest in public water delivery and sanitation systems, particularly in informal and marginalized communities, to prevent future outbreaks.”
CAPPA urges citizens to take precautions like boiling drinking water, maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene, and reporting cholera symptoms to local health centers immediately.
